The painting In the Silence powerfully illustrates those unbearable moments of waiting, where uncertainty suspends time. It evokes the silent and solitary bubble that surrounds us, even when the world, loved ones, and landscapes continue to be present. It is an intimate exploration of emotional isolation, where internal worry surpasses everything else.
At the center of the composition, a large circle dominates, resembling a door or mirror inviting us to enter this poignant scene. The circle’s border, made up of a red band surrounded by waves and radiant black dots, conveys a symbolic duality. It illustrates both the intensity of the concerns emanating from the central figure and the erection of a mental barrier preventing any help or support from entering. This red band is adorned with ivy scattered with round white fruits, further emphasizing the idea of emotional confinement, of painful attachment to anxiety.
Inside the circle, the background reveals a forest enveloped in bluish mist. The bare trees, barely outlined in the fog, enhance the sense of confusion and enclosure, where any exit seems inaccessible. These bare trunks also symbolize vulnerability, an exposure to the unknown.
In this atmosphere, a multitude of golden spheres floats in the air. They embody the thoughts and options crowding the mind, but also stars, faint glimmers of hope barely perceptible in this retreating atmosphere. They evoke the contrast between inner turmoil and the faint but persistent light of hope.
In the foreground, a young woman stands in waiting. Presented in three-quarter view, her face turned toward the viewer betrays a state of deep introspection. Her long red hair, seeming to merge with the surrounding forest, translates a forced connection to this place of silence and reflection. Her closed eyes and hermetic features suggest she has withdrawn from the outside world to lose herself in her thoughts.
Tattooed on her forehead is a solar symbol, evoking a quest for light and clarity, while two small black hearts beneath her eyes reflect a bittersweet suffering. Black plants growing from her ears could symbolize mental overload, the dark thoughts that proliferate and block reassuring messages from the outside world.
She wears a soft pink dress, contrasting with the austerity of the forest. A solar symbol is embroidered on her shoulder, affirming silent resilience, while a black heart adorns her chest, embodying the weight of waiting and pain.
