Thought :
You slide silently under these water lily leaves. You love this place for its calm and quiet that bring you the peace your heart needs every day. This place is the garden you cultivate in secret and that allows you to recharge your batteries, day after day. Take care of it.
The painting titled Under the Lily Pad Leaves is an ode to those hidden places, real or imagined, where one can find refuge to meditate, recharge, and observe the world in silence. It evokes the idea of secret gardens, inner sanctuaries where serenity is nurtured away from external agitation.
The composition of the painting is divided into two main parts, each carrying strong symbolism:
In this aquatic environment, small white plants emerge, timidly rising towards the sky like silent messengers. Large lily pad leaves are also visible, accompanied by their red flowers still in bud. These lilies, which open with the day and close with the night, embody the cycle of rebirth and renewal. Their presence serves as a reminder of resilience in the face of hardship, and the idea that after every darkness, a new light can emerge.
The water itself, a mirror of this scene, carries universal symbolism: that of purification and renewal. This calm water evokes rituals of spiritual cleansing, as well as fertility and regeneration, inviting the viewer to see in it a source of peace and transformation.
On the surface of the water, the upper part of a young woman’s face appears, almost camouflaged. Her red hair spreads around her like a floating halo, while her peaceful gaze, marked by small black hearts tattooed beneath her eyes, seems to observe her surroundings with gentleness. She is protected, almost hidden, under a large lily pad, evoking an intimate connection with this aquatic world. Her posture, both calm and contemplative, reflects inner harmony and serenity that only this refuge can offer.
This young woman hidden under the lily pad embodies the universal idea of an inner refuge, that intimate space where one can retreat to protect, center, and find serenity. Like this aquatic sanctuary, our secret gardens are spaces where we can reconnect with ourselves, away from the gaze and expectations of the outside world. Like her, we sometimes need to hide under a "lily pad," sheltered from the world’s turmoil, to dream, reflect, or simply be. But this hiding place is not an end in itself: it is a place of rebirth, a springboard toward a more harmonious existence, like those red flowers that patiently wait for the light to fully blossom.
