The painting Squirrel is composed of an oval on a white sheet, offering a window into a fantastical world. This oval is framed by a black climbing plant, resembling ivy, which elegantly outlines its contours.
In this vegetal mirror, we see a young woman sitting on the ground, in profile, immersed in a lush vegetation. Beneath a deep blue sky, plants in shades of black and blue rise upward, accompanied by large, undulating leaves in warm autumn colors: orange, yellow, brown, and green. These leaves resemble those of the oak tree, marking the transition between seasons as they fall. The scale of the elements suggests that the woman is miniature, barely larger than an oak leaf.
Her long red hair, swept by the wind, forms a flowing veil that partially obscures the landscape. She has her head slightly lifted, with closed eyes, as if listening to an imperceptible presence or sensation. A solar symbol is tattooed on her forehead, evoking a connection to vital energy and light, while a small black heart adorns the area beneath her eye, adding an intimate and poetic touch. She wears a long pastel red dress. The puffed shoulder of the dress is embroidered with the same solar symbol, and small white flowers dot the upper part of the garment, enhancing the harmony between the human and nature.
Resting on her shoulder, almost blending with her hair and attire, is a small squirrel. With its tail curled and a solar mark etched on its shoulder, the animal seems to share a silent communion with the young woman. Both direct their gaze toward a common direction, as if captivated by the same invisible force.
The squirrel, in many traditions, embodies deep themes. In some Native American tribes, it is seen as a spiritual guide teaching foresight and respect for natural resources. A symbol of planning and management, it also reflects the importance of preparing for the future while staying grounded in the present. Its habit of collecting and storing provisions for the winter conveys timeless wisdom: plan without excess, and adapt to the cycles of life.
The squirrel, with its liveliness and energy, adds a dynamic dimension to the painting, while inviting reflection on the balance between action and contemplation. This painting thus becomes an ode to the harmony between humans, animals, and nature, while opening a door to a rich and personal symbolic interpretation.
